Is It Time to Rethink Your Career Goals This Year?
It’s funny how fast the months seem to pass isn’t it? I was chatting to a candidate we placed earlier this year, and I was surprised to realise that it was way back in February that they started in their new role.
As we forward towards the middle of the year it is a good time to reflect on where your career is actually heading.
With the summer months creeping up, this means a summer holiday for many of us. Getting away from it all for a couple of weeks is a great way to unwind. The time away from work is also a good time to reflect on your career, because often we don’t have time, with busy work, home and social lives. So as we approach the halfway point of the year, here are three questions you should be asking yourself.
Where Am I Now?
Are you where you expected to be in your energy or building services career? Be honest with yourself, if you are; great. You’ve obviously paid close attention to your career, and you should be congratulated for that.
However if you are not,( which I suspect is the case if you are reading this) don’t beat yourself up about it. Now’s the time be proactive and start planning how to give your career a boost.
Where Do I Want to Be?
Unlike some industries, employees in the building and energy sector don’t always follow linear career paths. With a variety of sub-sectors, the size of firms and a diverse range of roles that often crossover, there’s a lot of options available to you.
Don’t be afraid of exploring areas you’ve never thought of before. For example, if you’ve always been employed by a large company, don’t immediately rule out smaller organisations. You’ll often find these kind of roles enable you to get more responsibility at an earlier stage than some larger employers. As specialists in the construction and energy sector, we’ll be able to give you advice on the options available to you.
How Am I Going to Get There?
Now you know where you want to be, it’s time to think about how to get there. Be realistic and think of the options that you have available to you. You may be able to move within your current company, but you should always tread with caution.
If your career has stalled within your current company what’s to say that this won’t happen again? It’s often much better to look elsewhere and find a company that places career development as a priority. That way, you’ll always keep your career moving forward. We can advise you which companies match both your skill set and ambitions.
Which Recruiter Should I use?
We understand that the number of recruitment agencies can be overwhelming for many candidates. You’ll probably see construction vacancies advertised by many different types of agency, but you can save yourself a lot of time and wasted energy by registering with a specialist energy and building services recruiter. The best employers only use specialist recruiters. Why? Because as a group we can provide informative, insightful and transparent advice that will help you focus on your career aspirations.
